Disable Screen Flicker/Blacking out before UAC Prompt

Posted in Microsoft Windows on the March 12th, 2007

You might have noticed you screen black out or flicker before the User Access Control (UAC) prompt pops up. This is not a bug but it is a security feature to grab your attention. Of course like the many other things in Vista that you don’t think, you could disable this blacking out or flickering too.

For Vista Home users specifically you need to open up RegEdit (Warning: Be careful while using RegEdit) and edit the following keys.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

And change to PromptOnSecureDesktop Key to 0.

For the rest of the Vista users you will need to pull up the Local Security Policy by typing in Security in the Start Search Menu. Then browse to Local Policies and then to Security Options. In the right hand pane disable the “User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation” item.

That’s it!
