E61 New Firmware 3.0633.09.04 Problems

Posted in Cell Phones & SmartPhones on the January 31st, 2007

Having upgraded my phone from firmware 1 to firmware version 2 and finding many improvements, I decided to upgrade to firmware version 3. Although the new version does seem to be much more responsive but I have lost a lot of functionality.

First of all I used to have my E61 connect to the Asterisk server which worked really well in the firmware version 2. Firmware version 2 did not support STUN so I could only connect on the local network which was still good. Having found that the firmware 3 supports STUN and persistent TCP/IP, gave me another reason to upgrade since I would not be restricted to the local network. But after upgrading I cannot connect to the asterisk server anymore, not even from the local network which used to work flawlessly before.

Secondly I had XpressMail from Cingular setup on my Firmware version 2 which again used to work flawlessly after I got my text message issue resolved (XpressMail uses text messages to push emails). After upgrading to firmware version 3, I can install XpressMail but I does not pull my account type. I get a (no data) message in the account type window. I have seen other people having this problem too and some say it is the XpressMail rather the E61 firmware causing this issue. So I really can’t say who is at fault here.

Anyways if you are on firmware version 2 and use any of the above functionality, think twice before you upgrade as I don’t know of any way to downgrade. Some who did try to downgrade just bricked their phones. Will keep you posted on any workarounds … Until then waiting for a fix.

UPDATE: I finally got Asterisk to work after I reinstalled the firmware. Turns out that running a restore after installing the firmware makes the phone to stop registering with Asterisk. So I did a reinstall again and did a synchronize rather than a restore and it happily connects to asterisk. Even better the phone now supports STUN so I register to an asterisk behind a NAT and with the phone also behind another NAT. Sweet! But no luck with XpressMail as of yet. Still getting the Account Type (no data) message.
